The Zamboni Training Program is a hands-on introduction to ice maintenance and Zamboni operation at the John T. Wright Arena. Participants will learn how the rink is prepared for public sessions, hockey games, and practices, with a focus on safety, basic machine operation, and daily rink procedures.
This program is open to the public, but is especially geared toward individuals who may be interested in becoming future Zamboni drivers at Mackay. Completing this program will help prepare participants for potential Jr/Sr Zamboni Driver roles in upcoming seasons. (Participation does not guarantee employment.)
Training Schedule:
Mondays: 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM
Tuesdays: 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM or 8:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Wednesdays: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Thursdays: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM
What You’ll Learn:
Zamboni and rink safety procedures
How to prepare and complete an ice cut
Basic machine checks and daily maintenance
How to log ice conditions and cuts in rink log books
Expectations for Zamboni drivers during games and public sessions
Who Should Register:
Ages 16+ interested in rink operations or future Zamboni driver positions
Current rink staff or community members who want to learn behind-the-scenes ice operations
Requirements:
Closed-toe shoes required
Dress appropriately for cold rink conditions
