Calling all teens, let's bury the hatchet!
Chop with a Cop is an exciting and FREE program that allows teens aged 13-18 to join officers from four different agencies in axe throwing competition. Only 48 spaces available! 
Teams will be randomly assigned; however selected time slots will be honored. Competition will be held in two sessions: 10:00 AM - NOON and 1:00 PM - 3:00PM.

Crabbing to Cuisine

Join Steve's Crab Shack learning all about the Blue Crab! Discussions include methods of catching crabs, types of bait, local areas where crabbing is permitted, as well as how to prepare and steam your catch. Participants receive hands on practice in picking Blue Crab for a taste test that is sure to have your tastebuds screaming for more!

*Participants under age 16 must attend with a registered participant age 18 and up

Training pet parents on HOW and WHY to turn daily interactions with pets into FUN and EFFECTIVE training opportunities. While dogs are NOT invited to this seminar, you are ENCOURAGED to bring questions specific to your dog's behavior problems.

Participants will have the opportunity to apply the information learned in this seminar to build fun and effective training strategies. This class is FREE to attend. Presentation copies will be available for $20.00. Please feel free to bring snacks and drinks. Bring your learning caps for this 4-hour class. For the Dog owners not the dogs.

Explore The Davis Canal Kayak Tours
Enjoy Oak Island's beauty from the water!  Guided trips are available through the Oak Island Recreation Department.  Trips last approximately 2 hours and include kayak rentals, paddle, PFD and experienced guides.  Paddle difficulty is easy.

Introduction to Drawing
Introduction to Drawing
Students develop black/white drawing techniques & principles. Students use various dry media and ink. Creativity is encouraged! Students must be 15 and older. Supplies needed for the class 10x12 sketchbook, larger paper (student’s choice), ink. Pencils, Erasers and Blending stubs will be provided by the Recreation Department. The following topics are covered: Control of lines, Control of shapes, Control of values, suggesting visual textures, Composition, Drawing from observation, Contour drawing and gesture drawing and Linear perspective. Students learn to distinguish painting, sculpture, architecture and Photography styles that occur in different historical periods. Students gain chronological understanding of art movements and how they relate to social history and religion. Supplies needed for class is just a notebook, no textbook used and no test! Selected works to be examined: Paleolithic cave paintings, Egyptian art, Minoan Painting & Cycladic idols, Greek sculpture & architecture, Early Christian symbolism & architecture, Roman art & architecture, Romanesque/Gothic architecture, Renaissance Art, 19th Century Painting: Neo-Classical/Romantic, Impressionism & Post- Impressionism, 20th Century art, Pop Art, Contemporary Painting, sculpture. Parking Lot Picasso
Parking Lot Picasso is an event where participants will be given a space on the sidewalk going around the recreation center to be creative with chalk. Participants will create their piece of art work in their given space. There will be judges and the winners will receive a ribbon. You'll learn everything you need to take a fish from the surf sand to the frying pan.  In this class, specifically designed for Oak Island anglers, we'll discuss the different fish in our surf and talk about the right rig and bait for the fish you want to catch.

Between The Lines: Book Club
Between The Lines: Book Club
Share your love of reading with other members of your community will Oak Island Recreation Department’s first book club. “Between The Lines” will feature a new book each month for participants to dive into tantalizing discussion as we navigate through a variety of genres. Bring your book, and a chair, as we meet at different parks throughout Oak Island (We will move indoors in the event of inclement weather). Light refreshments will be served. Participants are responsible for purchasing their own copy of their book with pre-registration required. "Between the Lines" will meet monthly from 2:00 -3:00 PM at TBA locations. Spaces are limited to be sure to reserve your seat today!
