Town of Oak Island’s Community Resource Center is a congregate nutrition program and senior center where individuals 60 and over can come to enjoy a well-balanced hot nutritional meal.  Individuals from Oak Island and the surrounding towns can participate in the programs, you do not have to be a resident; however, if you do not drive and require transportation you must live on the island.  Individuals can also enjoy some social/recreation (bingo, rummikub, etc.)  while attending the site from 10:00 to 2:00 (we do have special programs that are listed on our monthly calendar

Join Steve's Crab Shack learning all about the Blue Crab! Discussions include methods of catching crabs, types of bait, local areas where crabbing is permitted, as well as how to prepare and steam your catch. Participants receive hands on practice in picking Blue Crab for a taste test that is sure to have your tastebuds screaming for more!

*Participants under age 16 must attend with a registered participant age 18 and up

Come and join Oak Island's Recreation Department as we go off the island once more to explore a new location in the Cameron Art Museum. Hosting a unique setting of art, sculptures, and scenery, this excursion is sure to be lots of fun, especially for those that love art and artistic exhibits. There is a cafe located on site with several options for food, as well as a lovely campus surrounding the museum to walk around and explore. Lunch is not included as a part of program fees. The time of this excursion will take place from 9:30 AM - 3:00 PM, with us leaving from the parking lot of the Oak Island Recreation Center at 9:30 AM. Join Oak Island Recreation for a trip over to the neighboring Southport to check out the Maritime Museum, in addition to a day out on the town at Southport! The North Carolina Maritime Museum was voted one of the best attractions in Southport by newcomers and frequent visitors alike, boasting lots of history and preserved antiques for any coastal lover who wants to dive into the fascinating history and culture that this region supplies in abundance. The trip will take place from 9:30 AM - 2:00 PM, and we will be taking off from the Recreation Center parking lot at 9:30 AM. Lunch will not be provided as a part of the fee, but there will be opportunities to eat at whatever place you may choose in Southport.
