Where: Oak Island Recreation Center • 3003 East Oak Island Drive 

Students learn to distinguish painting, sculpture, architecture and photography styles that occur in different historical periods. Students gain chronological understanding of art movements and how they relate to social history and religion. The only supplies needed for class are a notebook, no textbook used and no test! Selected works to be examined: Paleolithic cave paintings, Egyptian art, Minoan Painting & Cycladic idols, Greek sculpture & architecture, Early Christian symbolism & architecture, Roman art & architecture, Romanesque/Gothic architecture, Renaissance Art, 19th Century Painting: Neo-Classical/Romantic, Impressionism & Post- Impressionism, 20th Century art, Pop Art, Contemporary Painting, sculpture.

A five week program that meets twice per week.

When: 5:00 PM - 6:30 PM

Where: Oak Island Recreation Center • 3003 East Oak Island Drive

Students develop black/white drawing techniques & principles. Students use various dry media and ink. Creativity is encouraged! Students must be 15 and older. Supplies needed for the class include 10x12 sketchbook, pencils, erasers, larger paper (student’s choice), blending stubs. The Oak Island Recreation Department will Supply Erasers, Blending stubs and erasers. The following topics are covered: Control of lines, Control of shapes, Control of values, suggesting visual textures, Composition, Drawing from observation, Contour drawing and gesture drawing and Linear perspective.
